Area Information.

The Gulf of Göcek and Fethiye is one of which you would never tire. The main road from Dalaman airports climbs into the mountains revealing the most breathtaking views.
The diversity of this forest-clad mountain range produces a dramatic backdrop to the plains of the beautiful coastal towns, villages and beaches that are scattered throughout the region creating a truly unique ambience. Fethiye sits at the foot of the magnificent Taurus mountain range which are snow-capped during the winter months (December to April)

Fethiye retains a decidedly Turkish feel. Exploring the warren of shop-lined streets in the old quarter is a truly fascinating experience. Restaurants are abundant serving a diversity of either traditional Mediterranean or International cuisines, and the authentic feel of Turkish life permeates the whole area, giving a real insight into a working town life in Turkey.
The bustling traditional Turkish harbour and town provides some fascinating sights and sounds, particularly on the weekly Tuesday market day.
On market day the roads are full of vehicles of all types – from old American trucks, to horses and carts spilling over with all manner of produce destined to create the vibrant colours and smells of Turkey. This is a fantastic opportunity to test out your bartering skills- Be warned it is expected!

Fethiye also benefits from being in close proximity to many other appealing villages.

Fethiye to Calis is merely 10 minutes by Dolmus or for a different experience, you can take the water dolmus. You can board this at the Harbour and it takes you directly to Calis Beach. The journey takes a leisurely 30 minutes. During this time you can soak up the sun and sights of the stunning scenery- Don’t forget your camera.

Calis is a small but growing resort which appeals to people who like to combine sun, sand and sea with an array of local colour. It is set on an inlet protected by the ‘Twelve Islands’, which form a sheltered natural harbour shared by fishing boats, yachts and water taxis. Its long, uncrowded sand and shingle beach is where the Caretta turtles are found nesting and the calm water and gently shelving beach makes this an incredibly child friendly resort.
Calis also benefits from a refreshing cool breeze during the hot summer months and is famous for having one of the most beautiful sunsets in the World.

The Local transport in Turkey is a mini bus called a ‘Dolmus’ which directly translated means ‘Stuffed’ The Dolmus has no designated stops- so to board you simply stand on the pavement when one approaches and wave it down! When you reach your destination you simply say ‘Stop’ you can pay the driver during your journey by passing the money to the person in front of you who then passes it forward to the driver- if you are owed any change this will again be passed back through the other passengers to you!!!! Alternatively you can wait until the end of your journey.

Fethiye to Ovacik is a 10 minute ride by Dolmus continuing 5 minutes along to Hisaronu and to Oludeniz or Kayakoy 20 minutes. The Dolmus is a wonderful experience and do not be surprised to see a couple of chickens or goats on the dolmus with you.

Hisaronu and Ovacik nestle side by side on the fertile plateau that lies between the picturesque Mendos and Babadag Mountains. Ovacik is a residential area which benefits from a refreshing breeze and a slightly cooler climate. Hisaronu is a purpose built modern village bustling with shops, bars and restaurants.

Towards Gemiler bay from Hisaronu you reach the Unique deserted Village of Kayakoy.
The Kaya valley is just a ten-minute drive from Hisaronu yet a million miles away in terms of ambience and tranquility. The green valley floor is bordered by the peaks of the surrounding pine clad mountains which extend to the very ends of the Fethiye Peninsula. Quirky single track roads wind along the valley floor through tiny hamlets, past fields growing wheat and tobacco, traditional tea houses, family run café’s and a couple of excellent bbq restaurants where outdoor dining is a must. This road finally leads onto the region’s most secluded beach of Gemiler.

Kayaköy which translates as ‘Rock Village’ is, of course, now famous for being the inspiration for Louis de Bernières novel ‘Birds without Wings’. The Greek village of Kaya was abandoned following the compulsory exchange of populations agreed between Turkey and Greece in 1926. Until then it had been a thriving community for centuries and at the time of the exchange had a Greek population of 20,000. However the Turkish community which returned from Greece decided to relocate to the foot of the mountain as the land was more fertile and easier to work. Rumors also has it that the Greek population living in the then Karmillassos cursed the land and houses from Turkish intervention.  As the years have passed the town has been left to crumble into disrepair leaving in its wake an eerie and fascinating ‘Ghost Village’ set in the most beautiful of rural valleys.

If you continue down the mountain from Ovacik you reach the beautiful beach resort of Oludeniz (Dead Sea) the most famous beach in Turkey. The peak of the region’s highest mountain, Babadag, plunges down to the stunning lagoon which has been photographed million’s of times and is a signature image of the Turkish turquoise coast.
The region around Oludeniz now has a distinctly touristy feel. However, this cannot detract from the stunning impact of the beautiful lagoon. A ‘must-have’ experience for the more adventurous is to enjoy the adrenaline rush of leaping from the top of Babadag to paraglide over the lagoon before eventually landing at the water’s edge.

Oludeniz is the venue for its ‘World Famous Airgames’ held twice a year due to popular demand and lasting for the duration of 3 days. This is attended by people of all nationalities who compete or simply soak up the exciting, breathtaking sights and wonderful atmosphere.
