Situated five kilometers from Fethiye, Calis is a small but growing resort which appeals to people who like to combine sun, sand and sea with a bit of local colour. It is set on an inlet protected by the ‘Twelve Islands’, forming a natural harbour shared by fishing boats, yachts and water taxis. Its long, uncrowded sand and shingle beach where the Caretta turtles are found nesting on the beach makes this beach incredibly child friendly
Calis also boasts - a cooling breeze, perfect for the hot summer months and is famous for some of the most beautiful sunsets in the World.
Calis has its own Sunday market selling lots of fruit and vegetables, local cheese and eggs, clothes and jewellery with a traditional Turkish atmosphere alternatively Fethiye’s lively, bigger market is held on a Tuesday where you can shop amidst the hustle and bustle- this is a fantastic opportunity to test out your bartering skills- It is expected!.
The Local transport in Turkey is a bus called a Dolmus which directly translated means ‘Stuffed’ The Dolmus has no designated stops- so to board the Dolmus you simple stand on the pavement when one approaches and wave! When you reach your destination you simply say ‘Stop’ you can pay the driver during your journey by simply passing the money to the person in front of you who then passes it forward to the driver- if you are owed any change this will again be passed back through the other passengers to you. From Fethiye to Ovacik is a 10 minute Dolmus ride, to Hisaronu 15 minutes and to Oludeniz or Kayakoy 20 minutes. The Dolmus is a wonderful experience and do not be surprised to see a couple of chickens or goats on the dolmus with you.
Hisaronu and Ovacik are nestled side by side on the plateau between the picturesque Mendos and Babadag Mountains. Ovacik is a residential area which benefits from a refreshing breeze and a slightly fresher climate. Hisaronu is a lively village bustling with shops, bars and restaurants aplenty.
The ancient Greek ghost town Kayakoy (rock Village) With its ‘ghost village’ ruins as a backdrop, the low plains of the Kaya Valley are surrounded by pine-filled mountains and punctuated by orchards, making its scenery some of the most beautiful in the region. Kaya is the place that time forgot. The pace of life is traditional, with many leading little more than a subsistence lifestyle, tending to land or livestock.
Continuing down the mountain you reach the beautiful beach resort of Oludeniz (Dead Sea) the most famous beach in Turkey. The peak of the region’s highest mountain, Babadag, plunges down to the stunning lagoon which has been photographed million’s of times and is a signature image of coastal Turkey.
Oludeniz is also blessed with being the location of the very famous and incredible ‘Blue Lagoon’.
The region around Oludeniz now has a distinctly commercial feel. However, this cannot detract from the stunning impact of the beautiful lagoon. A ‘must-have’ experience for the more adventurous is to enjoy the adrenaline rush of leaping from the top of Babadag to paraglide over the lagoon before eventually landing on the water’s edge.
Oludeniz is the venue for the world famous Airgames held in October for the duration of 3 days. This is attended by people from all around the world to compete in this aviation competition. It also brings nationwide media coverage. It is a very entertaining event for the many tourists that visit oludeniz during this time.
